Collecting

I think I have that gene or whatever that leads to collecting. One of the few things I remember about my time in the '80s is wanting to get all of the Ghostbusters figures and the related ghosts, which I never got. In the early '90s, I moved on to baseball cards. I still have that collection sitting in a closet. I should probably sell them off, actually. Around 4th or 5th grade, I hit sci-fi hard and took to Star Trek and then Star Wars. I still call Star Trek my first fandom. The result was me wanting to get all of the core cast in action figure format, which never happened. Around the end of the '90s, coin collecting came into fashion, and off I went on those. That's another one that's still hanging around, but I think I'll keep on hanging onto it. Around 2004/2005, I hit upon concert bootlegs, which led to my music obsession, as well. I've almost got my Queen bootleg collection into a state I consider complete (covering every tour and continent, only Africa and Australia are holding me back, with Africa possibly being impossible to obtain). Around that same time, I took an interest in LPs. Large enough artwork to appreciate it, kick ass music, and cheap prices. Why not grab it up whenever possible?

With the release of a new Star Trek film, I realized that I had a new chance of getting a complete set of Trek figures from the current movie, which would hit a nostalgia nerve and complete a childhood goal. I'm still waiting on the second wave of those... Given that I'd already taken the plunge, I also decided that picking up older Trek figures would be a good nostalgia trip, too. The next big mistake was glancing over the Star Wars figures in Toys 'R' Us. One of the Evolutions packages includes a rather mean looking Darth Maul (I still maintain that he's going to come to live and disembowel me with his teeth) and a Darth Nihilus, who I'd never seen before, but he looked evil and cool, too. That resulted in the flood gates opening. I'm up to over 50 Star Wars figures, 32 Star Trek (one autographed by Sir Patrick Stewart), 6 Green Lantern (3 Lanterns, 2 Manhunters, 1 Qwardian Weaponer), 1 Terminator, 1 Hiro Nakamura, 12" Dark Knight Joker, 3 Dark Knight 6" figures, 2 Transformers, several vehicles of varying scales, 2 playsets, 1 Star Wars blaster, and an ST09 phaser.

In the future, I want to branch out into Doctor Who figures and start picking up more figures aimed at collectors. I want to work on getting more Kenner Star Wars figures and more '90s Star Trek figures. I'd also like to get Ghostbusters back in my possession, and I'm hoping they launch a new line of 6 or 7" figures sometime. I also want to get more Enterprises, specifically B, D, and E. I also want to make 2010 the year I finally get the huge ass Millenium Falcon 'cause, you know, it's the fucking Millenium Falcon.
