I went and gassed up the Celebrity so I wouldn't have to do it after work while on the way to
rjwootang's place, and some guy started idle chit-chat with me about gas prices and such. I commented that I could run my car on about $40-$50 a month if I just went to school and back, he asked which school I went to, and I told him ETSU. He asked me what I was studying, so I told him computer science. He said some stuff about having seen a thing on Bill Gates a few days ago.
As I was leaving, he asked if I had a minute and that it was about computers. I put the car back in park, and he came over saying that he wanted to get in contact with Bill Gates about a plan to stop global warming. He had the URL written down to contact Gates via the MS site, but he didn't have an internet connection and didn't want to lose anonymity. At that point I was thinking, "That's a little odd." Not thinking much of it, I agreed to help him get in contact with Gates. He said eliminating the coal industry would really help stop global warming (most likely true), but they always worry about the jobs being lost. His solution to that was building power stations that he had been trained to build all his life. He said he didn't want me to get hurt over it, but he worries about the ramifications of global warming on his family. At that point, I was thinking, "He's just a little crazy." He gave me his business card with his cell phone number on it and told me not to give that out to anyone. He also gave me $10, saying, "I charge a dollar a minute for my time, so here's some money for yours. It'll help you on that trip you're taking." (I had mentioned that I was gonna be gone for the next couple of days hoping he'd sort of forget about it so I don't have a crazy after me or something.)
All in all, I think that was my first encounter with a random crazy.
I should've expected it, considering I always fill up at Wal-Mart (cheapest gas in town, and my engine doesn't give a damn that it's cheap gas).
