Queen on Fire Live at the Bowl
Aug. 13th, 2007 02:45 amWhen I first got the CD of the show back in 2004, I most likely gushed about how awesome the gig was and how awesome the band was that night, so I'll not go over that again.
The DVD makes the show even more alive. You can see the band being so very on on that night. Unfortunately, the stage was weird, so Queen's massive lighting rig wasn't so massive that night.
The picture quality is as great as can be expected from something that was shot on tape for TV in 1982. I think it's actually a bit better than the picture quality of the Wembley '86 DVD. I'd love to touch on the audio, but I've only got the built-in speakers on my TV for that, so no surround for me. I imagine Brian May's guitar solo in the middle of the show could be made rather surreal if the guitar moves around all 5 channels and the delays circle around through all the channels.
I haven't bothered looking at the interviews, as I usually find them dull, but I did check out the footage from Tokorozawa (Japan) and Vienna on the second disk. Only a few songs from each gig are on the disc (a triple concert DVD would be pretty cool, though).
From what I saw and heard, the Tokorozawa gig would be pretty awesome as a DVD if they remix the audio. There is an official Japanese laserdisc of the show, but it's cut. Much like the weird mixing on the Final Live show (another officially released Japanese laserdisc), the keyboards are mixed too loud. It's nice hearing it, but it shouldn't overpower the guitar at times. Roger Taylor is also either playing his electronic drums more or they were mixed louder for the release. It's just...bleh...too much like the god awful Works tour...
The Vienna gig looks fun. During Another One Bites the Dust, Freddie is wearing a robe thing, which reminded me of boxers (as in people who box, not the undergarment). The video itself has a nice grain to it (I think it was shot on actual film instead of tape). It really enhances Another One Bites the Dust and We Will Rock you. I'd like to get my paws on a more complete version of that concert.
