Java Development Environment

What's the best Java development environment? Preferrable something with very few bells and whistles. I'm going to try Eclipse in a bit, and I'm gonna give Textpad a try. OS really isn't much of a concern since I can just run a virtual machine to handle a non-Windows OS.
