I think I have figured out what my issue with modern gaming culture is. Gaming for immersion has taken a backseat to winning. The fantasy of it all seems to be lost on the current crowd. They play games to beat the game. They don't get lost in the fantasy of mowing down Nazi scum or slaughtering demons.
Or am I the weird one? Did anyone else who started gaming back in the late '80s play video games to live out fantasies? I played Wolfenstein 3D to kick nazi ass. I played the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games to be Donatello. I played Doom to giggle while mowing down wave after wave of demons. I played Duke Nukem 3D to be Duke and kick ass. Serious Sam was thoroughly enjoyed for similar reasons.
When I look at the current generation of gamers, they're all obsessed with saying they've beat this game or that in such and such time or how many achievements they've achieved on Live or whatever.
I want my damn escapism back.
